Living with(out) the pain

Before they became co-owners of ProActive, Justin Whittle and Chris Cluett met while studying to become practicing physiotherapists. As much as they love to help their clients manage and hopefully, eliminate pain; a big part of the business is about helping people reach their lifestyle goals in other ways.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Justin.pngIt is so rewarding to improve someone’s quality of life, but many clients live with their pain for far too long before coming to see us. Why is that? And why do they often leave after just a few appointments? Is it because they feel the pain is managed?

We came across Paul Gough years ago and couldn’t agree more with what he has to say about physio and why people need it, wait too long for it, and often leave just when the going gets good.

Internal problems

b2ap3_thumbnail_Chris.pngPeople often live with pain for months before they actually come to see us. The pain itself is not what motivates them to come – if it was, they would come to us as soon as it starts. Instead, it’s only when the pain affects their lives in some significant way that they decide to get help.

When you can’t physically pick up your kids, or enjoy a beautiful day, or your pain made you miss an important event –that’s when you make an appointment.

See Paul’s interpretation here:

Tell your story, all of it

b2ap3_thumbnail_Justin.pngOf course we want to know where it hurts, what the pain feels like, and how it impacts your movement. But we also want to know what your pain stops you from doing. How has it affected you emotionally? What would it mean to not have that pain anymore? These are the tough questions we need to be asking our clients, and they need to ask themselves.

Make a plan, and stick to it

b2ap3_thumbnail_Chris.pngLuckily, we’re great at assessing, addressing, and working with your pain, so those important things can be dealt with. When we start a round of physiotherapy with a client, we can see a beginning, a middle, and an end to their program. But once a plan is started, they have to stick to it in order to see the results they want; like being able to go out, be active, and enjoy their lives.

ProActive is our name AND our philosophy

b2ap3_thumbnail_Justin.pngYou’ve probably heard us say this before, but we truly believe ProActive is more than a name. It’s a philosophy. To be proactive with your health, is to address issues early on and keep them in check. Today you might not be able to lift your kids. Tomorrow you may not be able to get out of bed. It doesn’t have to be that way!

b2ap3_thumbnail_Chris.pngThat’s why we love our jobs, we see results and we can help you see results as well. And if you’re in pain don’t sit (or lay)there, get in touch to book an appointment at any of our locations throughout our beautiful province.
